BOSTON MARATHON
From the years of 2019-2020 I assisted in the design process for the Boston Marathon. For the years of 2021-2022 I became the project lead, assisting in the creation of nearly 200 deliverables across a variety of LED displays, information towers and the beloved finish line “Photobridge.”
We needed a way to relay important way finding information, event details, race statistics and runner data to a massive audience of runners, families and marathon enthusiasts. Looking at past Boston Marathon branding we developed a design system that worked on and off the course.
On the right is the world recognized photo bridge. An LED screen spanning the length of the bridge would; inform runners of the start time for each wave, display welcome and sponsor messaging, keep a running race timer and have finisher graphics for important racers. Each type of graphic was created as a general shell, where information like, race event, name and country/ flag could easily be created or automated. Different ’shells’ were created for a myriad of purposes to enforce comprehension, consistency and professionalism.

Inside the event spaces, full-size screens with commanding yellow text would inform attendees of future events as well as general way finding. Many locations would rotate in trivia and fun facts for fan engagement.
While I personally created many of the templates and filled many in with data, my wonderful team would design, engineer and automate nearly 200 screens per year to one of America’s most memorable events.
